I got a new “smart” phone yesterday. And it’s a whole lot smarter than I thought it would be. It’s fun learning how to use it. Of course I would rather be doing that than grading papers… so I guess it’s time to get back to that!

Three weeks. Just three weeks from tomorrow (Monday, April 18), I leave for Peru. And it’s notable that I’m not yet excited. It’s not that I’m not up for the adventure. I am. It’s just that there’s so much to cram in between now and then. I’m in the end-of-semester crunch along with taking those extra before-a-major-trip planning steps, making sure everything’s in place before I go.

And yesterday, I took Nita – who I met on my first trip to Peru nearly four years ago – to the airport, tying up a wonderful 4-day visit. Only after I dropped her off, did I realize that she’s a bridge from the me of that trip to the upcoming one. So much has changed, yet it’s happened in such small increments that I have to focus on each week and month to account for the steps. Life is like that, isn’t it? We hold steady in our day-to-day lives and “suddenly” we’re somewhere completely different.

So, back to the not being excited part… It’s a reminder to enjoy NOW. I’ve been caught up in grading papers and reading dissertations (congratulations to newly-minted Dr. Stephanie Crockett and Dr. Naomi Rock!), and readying syllabi for the summer session, and… forgetting to notice that spring has appeared! I know that 10 days or so before I actually leave, I’ll have the tingle of excited anticipation for this new adventure. I have my hiking boots by the doorway. New clothes that I’ve ordered have already arrived and are tucked away.

I’m gathering supplies for the service project we’ll be completing during the trip. This is the part I’m most looking forward to: spending at least one day with the children at a rural school. I have in mind to bring watercolors and brushes and paper — a sort-of “paint my world” project that I hope will become a means for some of the kids to find joy in art. Recently, I sent a FaceBook invitation out for a fundraiser, never having done this before. Thanks to those of you who responded!

Remember to enjoy NOW! This is my commitment for the next three weeks.

What a great day for a half-marathon! The sun was out. It was just a little cool. The winds calmed down for most of the route. I beat my time from the Rock & Roll Half, too!

Thanks for the good luck wishes. I’m VERY sore now, hobbling around – but feel great about the accomplishment.

If you ever have a desire to visit the beach for race or just for fun, call me! Suzan
